Summer Slide

At United Way, we believe a solid education is a building block to life long success and happiness, so we support programs which encourage literacy.  Research suggests students who keep their reading skills “sharp” by reading during the summer maintain the reading progress made the previous school year, helping them to begin the next school year ready to continue making gains without the typical “summer slide” of skills.

United Way of Aroostook partnered with Katahdin Trust to bring the Summer Slide Backpack program to 680 first graders throughout Aroostook County, providing those children with 3 new books, a backpack, some supplies, and activity sheets to go along with the books.  Together, we visited every public and private schools in the county along with a small population of home schooled first graders.
