Summer Slide

Research suggests students who keep their reading skills “sharp” by reading during the summer maintain the reading progress made the previous school year, helping them to begin the next school year ready to continue making gains without the typical “summer slide” of skills. ┬áIn June of 2016 we piloted the “Summer Slide” program with Pine Street Elementary’s first graders, giving each child 3 books to read during the summer. We are proud to have partnered with Katahdin Trust Company to offer it to all Aroostook County first graders! By June 14, 2017, we had visited 25 elementary schools and distributed over 640 Summer Slide backpacks, books, and materials to children enrolled in public, private, or home schools.
